Overview
A structural beam in the kitchen marks where the exterior wall used to be prior to the addition in the 1970s. Too costly to recess, I integrated it by replacing the drywall around it with beautiful wood, stained to add a natural warm element to the space. Custom cubbies were built to spotlight the owner's Japanese teapot collection. Special inserts were installed into the corner cabinets to make items easier to access.
Stove area
With the home's new solar panels installed, I replaced the client's old gas stove with an induction range and a hood with LED lights, making the kitchen more energy efficient. The addition of spice pullout drawers on each side of the range provides space for spices and oils. A washable area rug on the floor makes cleaning spills in the kitchen easier.
Sink area
Adding a copper work light illuminates the new durable composite sink with an updated faucet. To make space for the new induction range and upper cabinets, we removed two windows but added two skylights to brighten the area.
Nook
I revamped the existing built-in bench with new cushions and a pillow for lumbar support. Solar shades replaced curtains to soften the light. I hung wall vases with air plants to add a touch of greenery. The new windows were stained to add more warmth to the space.
Storage
Floor-to-ceiling cabinets provide much needed storage space. I moved the new washer and dryer into a custom-made cabinet with doors that can be closed when not in use. The refrigerator is located where the washer and dryer used to be. A copper magnetic board is attached on the side of the custom cabinet to display family photos.
Entrance to kitchen
I opened a wall to create a peninsula connecting the kitchen to the dining room. The counter space was expanded. New recessed lighting and the large dining room window now give more light to the room. The addition of a power outlet makes the peninsula more functional.
Dining Room
A walnut extension table transforms what was once a catchall room. The beautiful overhead light fixture provides a warm light to the space and is controlled by a dimmer. The area rug grounds the table and chairs and is machine washable. A wall of semi-sheer curtains adds texture and softness to the room.
